FREE Film Workshop is a great success

The Wootton Bassett Arts Festival ran a free short film workshop at Wootton Bassett Library on Saturday 6 August for people interested in writing and filming their own short film.

The workshop was run by award winning writer and director David Hawk and his in-depth knowledge of the industry and the filmmaking process was as obvious as his enthusiasm for the topic.  He has written and directed several short films of his own and has just finished writing his first feature length script, Facility 31.

Participants came from Wootton Bassett, Swindon, Cirencester and Reading and ranged in age from 12 to adult.  Illang Gnanasundaram, who took part in the workshop, said “I had read about some of the points that Dave was referring to in textbooks but it is quite different when someone explains it to you practically.  For me, it was like a refresher course that recharged my passion for this hobby.  Dave did a very good job covering all the fundamentals a film should definitely have, to make it a success”.

Film Workshop at Wootton Bassett Library

The Festival would like to thank two local businesses for sponsoring the event with the loan of equipment: Dreambase Studios for supplying audio visual equipment, including their video camera, and In-House Research and Training for supplying additional presentation equipment.

The Wootton Bassett Arts Festival has a new short film class in its syllabus this year.  Short films up to six minutes in length can be entered in the November festival, but the closing date for entries is 30 September.  For more information and to download a syllabus visit www.wbaf.co.uk or pick up a copy from Brian Taylor Music or Dandelion gift shop in Wootton Bassett High Street.

The Arts Festival is also holding two FREE Creative Writing workshops.  On the evening of 7 September Phil Kirby, a renowned local poet and our adjudicator this year, will focus on developing your poetry writing skills.  And on the afternoon of 10 September the attention will move to short story writing.  Both events will take place at Wootton Bassett Library and your place can be booked by emailing WBAFCreativeWriting@live.co.uk.

Lovely feedback comments from Poetry Master Classes

We’ve had some lovely feedback from the poetry Master Classes so we decided to share them with you:

“I really enjoyed being inspired and sharing and listening”

“I liked learning new ways of generating different images to kickstart the blank page”

“Nice atmosphere, well led!”

“I enjoyed attempting to write a poem and will steal several ideas. Enjoyed the fruit!”

“Loved bouncing ideas off each other”

“My own observations, given that I worked all day, was that there was really a nice atmosphere in the library and lots of laughter which was great”

It’s comments like these that make it all worthwhile – thanks everyone!

Drama Queens (and Kings)

On Friday 9th April the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival held two Master Classes in Speech and Drama at Wootton Bassett Library.

The Classes were a mixture of Poetry reading, role play and acting. The plan was to show participants how important it is to start by getting the voice right and then to move on to adding a physical presence and effective use of the stage.

Scenes were acted out from Narnia, Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in the Willows amongst others for the Primary aged children.

The secondary age participants were taken on a journey through several hundred years of acting incorporating extracts from plays such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, She Stoops to Conquer and Anne Frank – even the audience was called upon to take part at times!

Great fun was had by all and we hope that this will encourage everyone who took part to join in with more Speech and Drama in the future.

Take a Peek at the Poetry Writing Master Classes

On Wednesday 7th April the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival held Poetry Writing Master Classes at Wootton Bassett Library. The Festival has a Creative Writing Section with poetry writing being part of that but we are aware that many people would like to write poetry but worry that they would not be good enough. That is why we decided, in association with Wootton Bassett Library, to offer these FREE Master Classes to give people the chance to try it out, get a few ideas, learn a little and hopefully find that they really enjoy it.

Primary School Children enjoy their Poetry

The people taking part investigated different kinds of poetry such as Kennings and Acrostic poems. They looked at using alliteration, similes, metaphors, rhythm and rhyme…and when not to!

The writers shared their ideas, created word banks and then started to pull this all together into their own verse.

Poems were read at the end and are on display at the Library.

FREE Masterclasses in Poetry Writing and Speech & Drama

Fancy improving your Poetry Writing or Dramatic talents with the help of an expert? Well, in preparation for the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival there will be Masterclasses held at the Wootton Bassett Library during the Easter Holidays and what’s more they are completely FREE!

These sessions have been designed primarily to be fun and will also give people, who have not taken part in a festival before, the chance to try out their skills before thinking about entering the Festival.

Poetry Writing

The poetry classes will be run by Sue Chadd, a local poet, story teller and creative writing tutor. Creative Writing enthusiasts may well know her as a member of local poetry group, Bluegate Poets.  Sue has a MA in Creative Writing and Creative Writing Teaching from Cardiff University and has had many of her poems published including in the local poetry publication, Pulsar Poetry.   Sue, who has extensive experience facilitating creative writing workshops, will explore the inspirations for poetry based on the subjects featured in the poetry classes of the festival.

These classes will take place during the afternoon and evening of Wednesday 7 April, with each aimed at a different age group; 7-11 years (2.15pm – 3.15pm), 12-14 years (4.00pm – 5.00pm)  and 15 years through to adults (6.15pm – 7.15pm).

Speech and Drama

The Speech & Drama classes are planned for Friday 9 April and will be run by drama teacher Sandra McDowell.   Mrs. McDowell LGSM, ALAM, has been teaching Speech and Drama to pupils of all ages for nearly 30 years, and for the past 8 has been an examiner for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

The drama classes will include group work, and will work on acting, mime and reading of verse and prose.  There will be two classes; 7-11 years (1.30pm – 3.00pm) and 12-14 years (3.15 – 4.45pm) where everyone will be encouraged to join in and perform.

Book Early to Secure Your Place

The poetry writing sessions in particular have been planned to allow entrants a further two weeks to perfect their poems before entering them into the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival. Closing date for entries is 23 April 2010. Clearly the drama students will need to get their entry forms in too but will have all the way up to June to rehearse and perfect their performances.

The classes are FREE OF CHARGE, but places are limited and since schools have been informed of this opportunity people have already started make reservations, so book early to avoid disappointment by contacting Wootton Bassett Library on 01793 853249.

A Masterclass Leaflet can be downloaded from the Wootton Bassett Arts Festival website. See Creative Writing and Speech & Drama pages for full details.
